Our Mission

To broaden the reach of smallholder coffee farmers around the world.

Equal Access to Opportunity

We believe that every coffee farmer should have equal access to opportunity. Unfortunately, most Ugandan farmers are excluded from activities that would improve their lives significantly. This exclusion happens simply because smallholder coffee farmers have neither the financial nor the social means to obtain organic certifications. We believe the certification process is incredibly flawed because it is financially unattainable for smallholder farmers and is unnecessarily bureaucratic.

Organic by Default

The irony of the matter is that many small coffee farms across the world, especially in Uganda, are “organic by default.” Uganda is the birthplace of the Robusta species where generations of farmers have grown it without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

The majority of farmers who meet the criteria for a given certification cannot even reap the benefits. We believe that all organic certifications should benefit the farmers who follow the protocols, not marginalize them.

Our Core Mission

We aim to shed light on this inequality and foster active change. We started by working closely with many different smallholder coffee farmers for whom getting organic certified is beyond reach. We buy their beans at the organic market prices, thus supporting their ability to maintain their organic cultivation standards. This ensures that farmers benefit from their organic by default practices regardless of official certifications and keeps our partner’s farms sustainable. Our team in Uganda is in the final stages of receiving certification and endorsement from the Ugandan Government.
